Some Foot Care Tips

March 22, 2024 - Our feet take a beating when we work or play. So, any little extra thing you can do to help them out will reward your whole body. Blisters from shoe friction are not the only problem one can have with their feet. Your feet can bring you pain from anything like swollen feet to ingrown toenails.

Swollen Feet

A good foot soak in Epsom salts will help with everything from arthritis to plane old swollen feet. The salts break down into sulfate and magnesium in the water and some believe these minerals can be soaked in through the skin for not only the benefit of your feet, but the whole body.

Another good product to use for soaking your feet is baking soda and some fragrant oils. Not only makes a soothing soak but helps with foot odors as well.

Foot soaks should last no longer than 20 minutes. Be sure to dry your feet thoroughly when you are finished with your foot soak. Applying some moisturizer after towel drying your feet will help prevent drying out of the feet.

Do not try foot soaks if you live with diabetes or dry, cracked skin. Neuropathy can also make it difficult to determine the temperature of hot water which could lead to burns.

Corn and Calluses

Corns and calluses are hard and thick spots that develop on the foot's skin where there was friction or pressure, usually due to ill-fitting footwear. The skin develops these corns and calluses as a defense mechanism meant to protect against potential future wounds. A corn is generally smaller and more painful than a callus.

Soak your feet in warm, soapy water to soften your corns and calluses. Then rub a corn or callus with a pumice stone, nail file, emery board to remove the thickened skin. Wear comfortable shoes and socks to help prevent them in the first place.

Foot Fungus

Typically referred to as Athlete's Foot. This is a fungal skin infection that typically starts between your toes. It causes a scaly, itchy rash that may have burning or painful sensations. People may also experience ulcers or blisters that are very painful.

Even though there are some over the counter medications, athlete's foot can be extremely receptive to home treatment. Some of these treatments are Hydrogen Peroxide, Tea Tree Oil, Rubbing Alcohol, Sea Salt Baths, Talcum Powder and Vicks VaporRub.

It is key to keep your feet dry and clean as possible. As soon as you are done working out or just working, clean your feet, dry the space between your toes and put on a fresh pair of dry socks. Don't go barefoot in public pool or gym areas.
