Power Tools: Compound Miter Saws
A miter saw is a specialized tool that lets you make cuts at a variety of angles. This type saw has a blade mounted on a swing arm that pivots left or right to produce angled cuts. A miter saw can be used to quickly make cuts for picture frames, crown molding, window casings, door frames and much more.
Compound miter saws feature blades that pivot left and right for angled cuts and tile in a single direction for beveled cuts. Manipulating the saw on both of its axes at once yields a compound miter cut. They are useful for projects that require angled cuts in two planes. The advantage is that you can make compound cuts in one pass.
Dual Compound Miter Saws function like compound miter saws. While a compound miter saw tilts in only one direction, dual compound miter saws can tilt both left and right and allow you to quickly create bevels at any angle.
Sliding Compound Miter Saws have all the versatility of compound miters saws including a sliding feature, similar to a radial arm saw, allowing you to move the blade backward and forward. The sliding feature give you the advantage of an increased length of cut that it provides.

Using Your Compound Miter Saw For The First Time
July 14, 2023 - If it is your first time to use a compound miter saw then you might want to be prepared to be a little startled. The first time you squeeze the switch the miter saw will jerk and whine as the blade gets up to speed.
When you hear the blade get up to top speed then you can start your cut. Slowly and steadily lower the blade through the board until the cut is complete.
Then hold the saw carriage down in the completed position and release the switch, allowing the saw blade to come to a complete stop before raising it.
Always maintain a firm grip on the work piece until the blade stops spinning.
You might want to practice on some scrap boards a few times to really get the hang of it.
Always wear goggles and follow all the safety rules when using your compound miter saw at any time.
